Bobby & Steve
Few names in house music carry the weight of Bobby & Steve.
From Paradise Garage to Garage City, their journey helped shape the culture as we know it today.
In the first SPIRIT podcast episode, hosts Mike (Mike Risk) and Nigel (Merah) welcome Bobby of UK pioneers Bobby & Steve to discuss four decades in soulful house culture.
Bobby recounts early influences from disco, boogie, reggae sound systems, and London’s Crackers with Paul “Trouble” Anderson, then explains how he and Steve accidentally became DJs/promoters in 1984, launching Zoo Soulby.
He describes joining pirate Kiss FM, traveling with Norman Jay to New York in 1987, experiencing Paradise Garage shortly before it closed, and buying early house records at Dance Tracks—sparking their deeper move into house. Bobby traces the creation of Garage City in 1991 and its growth from a 200-capacity room to a 2,000-capacity weekly institution, then outlines Groove Odyssey’s origins with partner Michael Hughes, its Ministry of Sound residency, Fabric daytime parties, Ibiza events, and 51st State Festival.
He shares the impact of COVID-19, his own hospitalization, and Steve’s rare brain injury leaving him in PDOC, leading to “Dance for Stevie” and the Bobby & Steve Foundation.
The episode closes with Bobby’s views on today’s scene and AI, his top clubs and DJs, a favorite track (Marshall Jefferson “Move Your Body”).
